You Cannot Love a Body You Refuse to Move

Self-care goes beyond skincare, relaxation, and protecting your peace. True self-love includes movement. Regular physical activity strengthens muscles and bones, supports heart and brain health, and reduces the risk of chronic diseases. Your body deserves more than care; it deserves movement.

You Cannot Love a Body You Refuse to Move

You cannot love a body you refuse to move.

When your self-love and self-care routine does not include exercise—or worse, actively involves avoiding physical activity as much as possible—you are not fully practising self-love. You may be increasing your risk of illness.

I know that is hard to hear.

We have made self-care beautiful. We talk about candles, spa treatments, silk bonnets, and more. The popular image of the soft life is essentially, “Protect your peace and do not stress yourself.”

Yes! All of that matters. Rest is important, but true self-care cannot be sedentary. Rest without movement is not restoration; it can contribute to physical decline.

You have a skincare routine. You are conscious of what you put on your skin: cleanser, toner, sunscreen, and many other products. You would never say, “I love my skin,” and then never wash it.

However, you will say, “I love my body,” and go seven days without intentionally moving it.

Your body isn't a decoration you maintain with creams and affirmations. It is a functional system that thrives on movement and appropriate physical activity.

When you do not move enough, your muscles can weaken and shrink. Muscle isn't just about appearance. Skeletal muscle plays a major role in clearing glucose from your blood. Losing muscle mass can impair glucose regulation and increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Your blood vessels also need you to move. Regular physical activity supports cardiovascular health and helps maintain healthy blood pressure. Without enough movement, you miss out on these benefits, while prolonged inactivity can contribute to declining cardiovascular fitness and weakening bones.

When you consistently avoid activities such as squatting, stepping, and jumping, you reduce the mechanical stimulus that helps your bones maintain their strength and density.

And let us not forget brain fog. Exercise stimulates the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports the growth, survival, and function of brain cells. Regular physical activity can also help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

You cannot affirm a body you are allowing to waste away.

Self-love is not just about how you speak to your body. It is also about how you use it.

Love is action. If you love your body, walk with it. Carry things with it. Squat with it. Push, pull, and climb with it.

Just as you are conscious of your skincare routine, you must be conscious of your movement routine. It does not have to involve a gym. It could be 20 minutes of sit-to-stands, incline press-ups, step-ups, and a brisk walk around your house or neighbourhood.

Think of it as an investment in your future health.

The soft life you want requires a strong, healthy body to enjoy it.

You cannot love a body you refuse to move.

So, walk! Carry! Squat! Push! Pull! And climb!
